Alan Rickman 1946 – 2016
The beloved and wildly talented actor and director, Alan Rickman, passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 69-years-old. A statement released by Rickman’s family stated that he, “He was surrounded by family and friends.”
Rickman’s illustrious career kicked off in earnest following his role as the devious Hans Gruber in 1988’s smash hit Christmas movie Die Hard. His intimidating and commanding presence coupled with his very distinctive voice made him a cinematic icon.
While Rickman garnered a bit of a reputation for playing the perfect villain from his roles such as the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and the musical Judge Turpin from Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, his incredible range covered everything from drama to comedy.
Despite scores of memorable roles, many of Rickman’s fans he will be remembered as Professor Severus Snape of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter film series.
The tragic Potions Master remains a favourite character among fans, and some of that popularity is due to Rickman’s remarkable portrayal.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known as the Boy Who Lived, Harry Potter, took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to the man he calls, “one of the greatest actors” he has ever worked with.
