Fallout 4 | Ep. 54 – Far Harbor Seems Lovely This Time of Year

The island of Far Harbor has a way of drawing you in. One moment you’re admiring the rugged coastline disappearing into the thick fog, and the next you’re wondering what unseen horror is lurking just beyond the trees. It’s beautiful, unsettling, and packed with stories waiting to be uncovered—provided you don’t get distracted along the way.

That’s exactly where this latest adventure takes us. Rather than rushing headlong into the main story, we embrace the spirit of exploration, following winding paths, chasing side quests, and uncovering the many secrets hidden across the island. Of course, in true Fallout fashion, a simple plan never stays simple for very long.

🌫️ About the Game

Fallout 4 places you in the role of the Sole Survivor of Vault 111, emerging into a world devastated by nuclear war. Every journey through the wasteland is shaped by the choices you make, whether you’re rebuilding settlements, forging alliances, uncovering forgotten stories, or simply trying to survive another day against raiders, mutants, and creatures twisted by radiation.

The Far Harbor expansion takes that familiar post-apocalyptic adventure somewhere altogether different. Wrapped in an eerie coastal fog, the island introduces mysterious factions, dangerous wildlife, and a constant sense that every abandoned road or lonely cabin is hiding another tale waiting to be discovered.

🧭 Where We Are in the Journey

Our adventures through Far Harbor continue as we deliberately leave the main storyline waiting while we circle the island instead. After arriving on the island during previous episodes, this chapter is all about getting our bearings, uncovering new locations, helping the locals, and steadily working through the growing collection of side quests we’ve gathered.

By exploring first and saving the larger story for later, we’re getting a much better feel for everything Far Harbor has to offer, while also making sure no interesting corner of the island goes unexplored.

🔥 What Happens in This Episode

Returning to Far Harbor, the original plan seemed straightforward enough: continue exploring the island in an anti-clockwise direction, finish off the side quests we’d collected during our first visit, and leave the main quest exactly where it was. Naturally, the wasteland had very different ideas.

Before long we were investigating damaged fog condensers that protect the town from the ever-present mist. Finding them, however, proved far less straightforward than expected, and what should have been a quick repair job quickly turned into another excuse to wander even further off course. Rather than force the issue, we left that mystery for later and continued north towards Dalton Farm, clearing out the area before pressing onwards to Eagle’s Cove Tannery to recover the power tools waiting there.

Like every good scavenger knows, no expedition stays tidy for long. Every abandoned building seemed to contain another useful piece of scrap, another weapon, or another bit of loot that simply couldn’t be left behind. Before long we found ourselves becoming thoroughly “over-cucumbered,” weighed down by enough junk to slow even power armour to a crawl. With our armour also needing repairs, it was time for an unexpected trip back to Sanctuary.

That simple repair stop soon descended into one of the evening’s funniest running sagas. Sanctuary had everything we needed—except copper. Off to Diamond City we went to buy supplies, only to discover after returning that we’d completely run out of steel instead. Back to Diamond City again, where night had already fallen, leaving us standing around waiting for the shops to open before we could finally finish repairing the power armour. Sometimes surviving the wasteland isn’t about defeating monsters; it’s about defeating your own inventory management.

Properly equipped once again, we headed back across the sea to Far Harbor. Along the way we unlocked Longfellow’s Cabin as another useful destination before taking yet another look for those elusive fog condensers. Unsurprisingly, another distraction appeared before we could make much progress. Tracking down a missing synth led us to a house occupied by cannibals, transforming what began as an investigation into another tense firefight. After reporting everything back to Acadia, our speech skills once again proved their worth by squeezing every possible cap out of the rewards. Every extra bottle cap mattered after spending so much on Sanctuary’s building supplies.

Of course, even while supposedly searching for fog condensers, curiosity won once more. A detour led us into Beaver Creek Lanes, where another location was thoroughly cleared before finally making our way back towards Far Harbor. Only then did we realise the objective we’d been chasing simply needed turning in back in town. It was an appropriately Fallout moment—hours of exploring, scavenging and battling across the island, only to discover the solution had been waiting behind a conversation all along.

The stream perfectly captured why wandering the wasteland is often more memorable than following the critical path. Legendary enemies, trappers, mutated wildlife and towering fog crawlers all tested our firepower throughout the evening. Explosive ammunition handled many encounters with spectacular efficiency, while trusty Big Jim stepped in whenever enemies needed introducing to the business end of a melee weapon. Between battles, chat was filled with conversations ranging from future Fallout games and classic sci-fi favourites like Red Dwarf and Stargate to courier horror stories, movie night plans, simulator games, and the wonderfully ridiculous discussion of blinker fluid factories and capturing bubbles for spirit levels.

Even the familiar jokes made a welcome return. Becoming over-cucumbered, blaming Bethesda for quest chains that seem determined to spiral into three more adventures, and trying to stretch every last cap as far as possible all became part of the night’s rhythm. Attempts to expand Sanctuary may have been frustrated by stubborn building tools, but at least one mystery remained wonderfully unsolved: Trashcan Carla’s Brahmin is still somehow standing proudly on the roof, refusing to acknowledge the laws of physics.

Rooftop Brahmin (Still up There)

As the night drew to a close, Far Harbor had opened up considerably. More locations had been explored, side quests pushed forward, rewards negotiated to their absolute maximum, and a clear path emerged for future adventures around the island before tackling the main story. We rounded off another relaxed evening by unloading back at Sanctuary before raiding over to OurChickenLife, sending the community on to continue the night’s adventures together.

🌌 Until Next Time

Far Harbor still has plenty of secrets hidden beneath its endless fog, and we’ve only just begun to uncover them. There are more paths to explore, more stories waiting to be discovered, and no shortage of side quests ready to distract us from whatever we originally planned.

Until next time, stay safe out there, keep your power armour repaired, never trust a simple shopping trip, and remember—if you see Trashcan Carla’s Brahmin on the roof again… perhaps it’s best not to ask how it got there.
