Fallout 4 | Ep. 56 – Going to Far Harbor Because Bad Decisions Need Variety

🌫️ Back Into the Fog

Apparently wandering through radioactive fog wasn’t enough the first time. Back to Far Harbor we go, where mystery, monsters, and questionable decisions await.

Tonight’s return to Fallout 4 came with one additional survival mechanic Bethesda probably never intended: I may have had a slight case of dysentery. So while the Sole Survivor was preparing to brave radioactive wilderness, there was always the possibility that I might need to make a considerably more urgent escape.

And somehow, that still wasn’t the biggest problem we faced.

☢️ About Fallout 4

Fallout 4 drops us into the irradiated remains of Massachusetts as the Sole Survivor of Vault 111. The old world is gone, civilisation is scattered across settlements and fortified strongholds, and practically everything outside wants to shoot, bite, irradiate, or otherwise inconvenience you.

Far Harbor takes that already dangerous world and buries it beneath an eerie radioactive fog, introducing new creatures, factions and mysteries where every answer seems to uncover another problem.

🧭 Where We Are in the Journey

Episode 56 continues our expedition through the Far Harbor DLC. We’ve spent the last few streams helping the people of Far Harbor while slowly working our way towards the larger mystery surrounding DiMA, Acadia and the Children of Atom.

This time, we were close to clearing the remaining Far Harbor side missions and finally pushing the main story forward.

We just needed to survive our own preparation first.

🔧 What Happens in This Episode

Before Far Harbor could even happen, our power armour needed repairs and we were short on circuitry. That meant a trip to Diamond City, followed by Sanctuary, where I discovered another minor problem: last week we had somehow burned through all 600 rounds for the exploding-rounds machine gun.

Back to Diamond City we went, returning with another 300 rounds before finally crossing over to Far Harbor.

Heading north brought us to the National Park Visitor’s Center and Uncle Ken. I expected ghouls. Instead, human raiders arrived, and the game demanded we spend precious resources building turrets to defend a man we ultimately convinced to return to Far Harbor anyway. Excellent investment.

Before taking him back, we pushed west towards Echo Lake Lumber, clearing out the ghouls and an enormous hermit crab. Ammunition conservation increasingly involved introducing enemies to Big Jim at extremely close range.

Naturally, we didn’t stop there. An island on the map looked interesting, so we explored farther west, clearing Rayburn Point and the surrounding camps before eventually returning to Far Harbor.

With those quests turned in, it appeared we had finally completed the settlement’s side missions. The main quest was waiting.

Unfortunately, our power armour’s legs were practically destroyed.

That sent us back to Sanctuary, where we discovered we had no aluminium. So it was back to Diamond City again, then Sanctuary again, before the armour was finally repaired.

Our next destination was the Nucleus and the Children of Atom. We approached from the cliffs, where I made the entirely sensible decision to jump down in power armour.

Apparently landing like an artillery shell outside someone’s home is considered hostile.

Everyone attacked. A brief death loop followed. We reloaded.

The second attempt involved considerably less orbital bombardment. To gain entry, we were sent to Atom’s Spring to drink the special fun water. On the way I jumped into the water in power armour and immediately sank to the bottom because, apparently, physics still exists in the apocalypse.

After escaping, we drank from the spring and followed a ghostly figure to a shrine. Inside came one of the evening’s greatest challenges: finding a passcode.

We searched behind doors. We checked pipes. We wandered around for what felt like an eternity.

It was written on the side of a filing cabinet.

With the door finally open, we collected the figurine and returned to the Nucleus. Inside, memories from playing back in 2016 started resurfacing when I recognised the enormous submarine sitting in dry dock.

After temporarily forgetting why we were there while somebody delivered a sermon nearby, we followed the waypoint, fought through a small army of droids and reached the terminal containing DiMA’s memories.

Then Fallout 4 suddenly became Matrix Minecraft.

The memory retrieval sequences had us moving blocks, redirecting lasers and placing defences while increasingly tired decisions turned the puzzles into the real boss fight. They even reminded me of Legion’s loyalty mission from my 100% Mass Effect playthrough.

Along the way, the memories began revealing serious secrets involving DiMA, including a nuclear launch key and a kill switch capable of disabling Far Harbor’s fog condensers.

Chat, meanwhile, had its own adventures. Spiffymango1274 continued advocating the diplomatic strategy of murdering everybody, confused AIDA with increasingly ridiculous usernames, and collected victories in the community Hunger Games. And whenever anything went wrong—from missing audio to broken armour and misplaced puzzle pieces—there was one obvious explanation:

#blameGary.

Eventually, tiredness won. While apparently tackling the final memory puzzle, I kept making mistakes and accidentally exited the level.

That seemed like the universe telling me something.

We’ll finish that final memory and continue deeper into the Far Harbor story next week.

The fog is considerably more entertaining when there’s a crew watching from the other side of it.

Come join us live on Twitch or YouTube, where chat can influence the chaos, witness the mistakes in real time and, apparently, blame Gary for absolutely everything.

We finished tonight by raiding into OurChickenLife, sending the community onward together after our expedition into the Nucleus came to an end.

🌌 Until Next Time

We survived Far Harbor, repaired the armour repeatedly, annoyed an entire religious faction, uncovered some deeply uncomfortable secrets and almost defeated the strangest puzzle Fallout has thrown at us.

The final memory is still waiting.

Until next time, stay safe out there—and if anything goes wrong, you already know who to blame.
