Deliverage | Ep. 2 – Another Completely Legal Transaction Behind the Bins

We’re back in the delivery business, and everything remains entirely above board. We’re simply meeting people behind bins, exchanging packages, and going about our perfectly ordinary working day. Please stop looking at us like that.

On tonight’s stream, we returned to Deliverage, or Deliver Rage. I’m still never quite sure how I’m supposed to say the name of this game. It is basically like Motor Town with knuckle dusters, and this time most of the evening became a fight between us, the economy, and a van that really did not want to stay upright.

📦 About the Game

Deliverage is a hardcore open-world PvP delivery game where every shipment is a gamble. We are trying to build ourselves up from very little by moving valuable cargo, making money, repairing and modifying vehicles, and working our way through an economy where other players can potentially interfere with what we are doing.

The PvP side is there if we want it, but for our sessions we are much more interested in the delivery side, exploring the map, finding profitable routes and trying to keep the vehicles in one piece. That final part is currently proving more difficult than everything else combined.

🛠️ Where We Are in the Journey

We started exactly where we had left off a few weeks earlier. I had been really busy and had barely managed to play anything between streams, so there had been no off-stream progress at all.

That meant our van was still sitting there completely knackered and refusing to start. We needed around fourteen grand to repair it, had nowhere near that amount available, and therefore began the evening on foot. Before we could get back into the delivery business properly, we first needed to rebuild the bank balance.

⚠️ What Happens in This Episode

We started the evening exactly where we had left things a few weeks earlier. I had been so busy in between streams that I had not made any progress at all, which meant our van was still sitting there looking more than a little knackered. In fact, it had gone beyond “a little bit of panel beating” and reached the point where it would not even start. We needed around fourteen grand to repair it, we did not have fourteen grand, and so our return to Deliverage — or Deliver Rage, because I am still not entirely sure how I am supposed to pronounce it — began on foot.

Naturally, the solution was magic mushrooms. We spent the first part of the night running back and forth carrying five at a time, because that was all we could manage without a working van. Each little run brought in a decent amount of money, although none of it was particularly useful until we took our collection of completely legitimate earnings down to the laundromat and turned it into money we could actually spend. Every time I use the money laundering in this game, I still picture that scene from Loaded Weapon where somebody opens the door and there is literally a washing machine full of cash going around inside. That is now permanently how I imagine the whole operation working.

There was also a small but genuinely brilliant change waiting for us when we came back to the game. Last time we played, I had mentioned to the developer that the action tooltips normally appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen. That is not usually a problem, except my microphone arm completely covers that part of my monitor when I am live, so I was constantly trying to work out what button I was supposed to press while twisting my head around the microphone. It was the kind of ridiculously specific problem that probably only affects me, but the developer actually added an option that lets me move those prompts higher up the screen, closer to where they appear in something like Construction Simulator.

It has made an enormous difference. I can now actually see what the game is telling me to press without having to physically peer around the microphone every time I walk up to something. It was absolutely awesome of the developer to add something like that from a little bit of feedback, especially when it is such a niche problem, so thank you again for doing that for us.

Once the mushroom money had finished going around the laundromat, we finally had enough to spend fourteen grand repairing the van. It came out looking shiny again, which meant there was only one sensible thing to do: immediately put it back in danger. We headed up to the petrol station, filled the tank, and noticed that the station itself could do with a fuel delivery. Checking the map showed that we needed to travel back over to the other island, across the bridge we had first visited during the previous stream, collect fuel there and bring it back to some of the stations around the area where we normally operate.

The slight problem was that repairing the van had not done anything about its handling. Its centre of gravity still appeared to be living somewhere in the land that time forgot, and the entire thing wanted to fall over if you so much as thought about steering. We were going to have to take it very gently until we could afford one of the more stable vans.

We did at least have a way of saving some money on the journey. Leaving town meant going through a ten-pound toll, so we used the trick we had discovered last time: get out, push the van through the toll booth, walk through after it and climb back inside. That worked nicely, so when we reached the bridge and its five-hundred-pound toll we did exactly the same thing. The van was pushed through the gap, I climbed back in, and away we went with another five hundred still in our pocket.

Somehow, we made it across the bridge and into the badlands without immediately destroying anything. We even stopped briefly along the way to pick up some supplies from bushes and took those into town with us. For a while everything was going suspiciously well. In fact, I think I may actually have said something about how far we had travelled without damaging the van, which was obviously the wrong thing to say. I got distracted by chat for a moment and promptly had a small accident. Luckily, it was only minor damage, and we continued on to collect the fuel.

We loaded the van with as much as it could carry and began the journey back towards the mainland. This was where the evening took a slightly different direction.

Just before reaching the bridge, we came around one of the corners and may have slightly fallen off the road into the water. Initially it did not look too terrible. The van was on its side, the water did not seem particularly deep, and there was every chance we could simply push it back over and continue as though nothing had happened.

That was not what happened.

The next ten minutes became an increasingly unsuccessful attempt to roll the van out of the hole. Every time it looked as though we might get it upright, it would fall back over or slide a little farther into the water. I tried getting behind it, pushing it from different angles and moving around the edge of the water looking for somewhere shallow enough to recover it. Instead, the van gradually worked its way deeper until I was swimming around beside it while our fuel delivery quietly disappeared farther from dry land.

Chat was naturally extremely supportive throughout all of this. Gary had already managed to jinx us earlier by pointing out how long it had been since I had crashed, and the corner was soon being referred to as “death loop corner.” Eventually the van was so thoroughly stuck, and the chassis so twisted from everything we had done trying to rescue it, that we had to admit defeat and use the emergency recovery option.

That cost us another thousand and teleported the vehicle back to a garage, which rather helpfully put us almost back where we had originally picked up the fuel. At least the cargo survived, so we had another attempt at exactly the same journey. This time we approached death loop corner very, very slowly and somehow stayed on the road.

Getting back over the bridge created another opportunity to avoid spending money. We still did not particularly fancy handing over five hundred, so I lined the van up, let it roll through the toll booth using whatever momentum it still had, jumped out, ran through after it and managed to catch it on the other side before climbing back in. Between the outward and return journeys we had now saved ourselves a thousand pounds at that bridge alone.

We pulled the same trick again at the ten-pound toll coming back into town, although there may have been a slight timing issue when I got out of the vehicle and the van may possibly have continued into the barrier. There is no evidence to prove that happened.

The fuel itself eventually reached the petrol station, but after all that work we only made around three grand from the delivery. Considering what the van had just been through, it became very obvious that we would have been better off spending the entire time selling mushrooms. The vehicle was once again in absolute tatters, so rather than throw another huge repair bill at it, we returned to the more profitable mushroom business and started slowly creeping down the back roads towards the places where we could stock up again.

Those runs were much more worthwhile, bringing in somewhere around seven grand at a time depending on what we managed to carry and sell. Mister Smith also joined us in-game during this part of the stream and began following along with a recovery vehicle, which was becoming increasingly appropriate as the condition of our own van continued to deteriorate.

The biggest problem was not even the damage. The van is so unstable that driving it requires constant little corrections, and after spending most of the stream fighting with it my fingers were genuinely starting to ache. As my hands became more uncomfortable, the driving became progressively worse, which naturally led to more damage, which made the van even more unpleasant to drive. It was a lovely little circle.

We did manage to get some proper exploration done in amongst all of this. We took resources farther up towards the north end of the island, visited areas I had barely explored before, and Mister Smith showed me where the more stable van can be found. That finally gave us something useful to work towards. We had climbed back to somewhere around thirty grand by the end of the evening, while the replacement we actually wanted was going to cost roughly forty-two thousand.

There was another van available for around thirty-four grand, but it looked suspiciously like the same unstable model we were already driving, so there did not seem much point swapping our wreck for a fresh version of exactly the same problem. The better option is to keep saving and get the vehicle that should hopefully stay on all of its wheels for more than five minutes at a time.

Chat, meanwhile, continued providing its own background chaos. AIDA temporarily became convinced that every message required welcoming Stryker again, which resulted in the entire chat effectively becoming Stryker for a while. There was a Hunger Games that ended with vvoornth killing me “again,” JD successfully dealt with a Spiritomb during one of the Pokémon contracts before later failing against a Maractus, and we even found time for a bank heist with Mister Smith and JD while our actual criminal enterprise continued in the background.

By the end of the night, the van itself had become the main attraction. The sides were completely caved in, the front had been crunched inward until the wheels looked as though they were trying to become one, and what had started the stream looking vaguely like a Transit van was now being compared to a Reliant Robin, a tuk-tuk and eventually something closer to a rickshaw. One small reinforced section appeared to be about the only part of the bodywork still holding its original shape.

At that point, spending another fourteen grand repairing it simply did not make sense. We would only be taking money away from the replacement van, then spending the next stream damaging this one all over again while trying to earn that money back. Before we return to Deliverage, I am going to try my best to get enough together to buy the more stable van so that we can finally stop wrestling with this thing and start doing some proper deliveries.

We ended the evening by leaving the remains of the van where they were and raiding into Mister_NalaVT. Next time, hopefully, we begin with enough money to retire the tin-foil rickshaw, buy something that can survive a corner, and start making some real pennies around this town.

What could possibly go wrong?

A lot of what makes these streams fun is everything that happens around the game itself: chat jinxing the next crash, Mister Smith appearing with a recovery vehicle, AIDA deciding everyone is Stryker, and the evening eventually rolling into a raid on Mister_NalaVT.

If you want to be there while it is all happening, you can join us live on Twitch or YouTube. You never quite know whether the next delivery will make us money or put the van into another body of water.

🚐 Time to Retire the Rickshaw

We ended the night with around thirty grand, a clear route towards the better van and considerably less van than we had started with.

Hopefully, by the time we return, we can finally replace it with something that stays upright long enough for us to do some proper deliveries. Then we can start making some real money around the map.

What could possibly go wrong?
