Red Dead Redemption II | Ep. 19 – Sun’s Going Down. Best Settle This Before Dark.

Arthur rides again as our journey through Red Dead Redemption II continues. The sun is disappearing over the horizon, trouble is undoubtedly nearby, and if there is unfinished business to deal with, we had probably better handle it before things get even darker.

Given the curse that seems to hang over our Friday-night streams, it is actually amazing that we have managed two Red Dead Fridays in a row without rearranging or cancelling something. This time we had unfinished business involving death loops, an electric chair and a prisoner who really did not want to discover what the professor had planned for him.

🤠 About the Game

Red Dead Redemption II follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde Gang, a group of outlaws trying to survive while federal agents and bounty hunters close in around them. The gang has to rob, steal and fight its way across the rugged heartland while the world around them becomes increasingly hostile.

We are playing as Arthur, travelling between story missions and the many strange side quests scattered across the map. Those side stories have become a large part of this playthrough, which is why an evening can quite easily move from chasing criminals to helping a nun, experimenting with electricity and trying to remember how selling an animal pelt actually works.

🐎 Where We Are in the Journey

This is Episode 19 of the playthrough, and we picked up exactly where the previous stream ended at The Mercies of Knowledge, Part Six. Last week we had gone out to capture the man intended for the professor’s electric chair, but after getting caught in a couple of death loops while my shoulder was hurting, I decided it was better to stop rather than keep repeatedly getting killed.

This time we finally pushed that storyline forward while also completing several other side missions around Saint Denis and further north. By the end of the stream we had reached 41% story completion and 38% overall completion, so there is still plenty left to discover.

⚡ What Happens in This Episode

We picked up exactly where last week left us, at the beginning of The Mercies of Knowledge, Part Six. Given the curse that normally hangs over Friday-night streams, it is actually quite impressive that we managed two Red Dead Redemption II Fridays in a row without having to cancel something or move the schedule around.

Last time, we had gone out of town to capture Wilson J. McDaniels, although at the start of this stream I could not actually remember his name. That attempt had turned into a couple of death loops while my shoulder was hurting, so we had decided to leave it there rather than spend the rest of the evening repeatedly dying. This time, however, the capture went almost suspiciously well.

We made short work of the gang around him and only needed a very brief chase. Rather than messing around trying to catch Wilson on horseback, we simply shot the horse out from underneath him. We already had the rope out, so it was a case of roping him, jumping down, tying him up and getting him onto Tesco’s Lasagna before anything else had time to go wrong.

Naturally, the ride back was where the problems started.

We fell off the horse more than once and seemed to upset a surprising number of people on the road. There may have been a few accidental collisions along the way which resulted in everybody being thrown from their horses, followed by those people becoming extremely angry about it. I had not intentionally planned on killing anybody. They just became a little overexcited.

There was also a moment where I thought Tesco’s Lasagna might have died in the middle of all this, but fortunately the horse survived, as did Wilson, who spent much of the journey complaining rather loudly about what was waiting for him at the other end.

We finally delivered him to the professor and expected the mission to flow straight into the promised electric-chair demonstration. Wilson was loaded into a much larger cart with a cage on the back, while the professor climbed into another cart, so we followed along assuming we were heading directly towards the execution.

Instead, after a few streets, the professor simply got out.

He wandered away from the cart, we followed him for a little while, and then after he disappeared around a corner for a moment he appeared to despawn entirely. There was no obvious objective, no electric chair and no professor. We rode north out of the area, circled around and came back into Saint Denis in the hope that the mission would reset itself, but nothing happened. At that point, we assumed the game probably wanted us to leave it for a while and went looking for something else to do.

That brought us to Brothers and Sisters, One and All, where a child steals a crucifix from Sister Calderón and Arthur gives chase.

The first part went perfectly well. We caught up with the kid, recovered the crucifix and started heading back. Then somebody came running out and began accusing us of something, the police became involved, and the whole evening suddenly turned into a lesson in how difficult it is to lose the law in Saint Denis.

This was where the death loops really got going.

We tried simply running away. We tried getting out of town. We tried a serpentine pattern, zigzagging backwards and forwards while the police fired at us, which was actually surprisingly effective. They could not seem to hit us at all until we became stuck on the terrain, at which point the bullets very quickly remembered where we were.

On another attempt, we finally escaped the police and managed to get clear of town, only to discover that we obviously had to go back into Saint Denis to finish the mission. We returned, walked past another police officer and were almost immediately in trouble again. That attempt lasted considerably less time.

Eventually we took the more sensible approach. Back in the marketplace where the whole chase had begun, we hid behind a pillar for several minutes and watched the officer moving around on the radar. Once he wandered onto another street, we slowly crept out of his search radius.

From there, we crouched our way through Saint Denis, checking everyone ahead of us and trying to identify the blue-uniformed officers before they spotted us. It became a very slow trip through streets we had already sprinted through several times, but this time it worked. We finally reached Sister Calderón, returned the crucifix and completed the mission without attracting the entire police force again.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, Megxta arrived in chat and asked whether I had ever streamed with the chickens. Everyone who has been around for a while knows I have pet chickens, but Meg is relatively new to the channel, so Red Dead was immediately put on hold while I jumped over to YouTube.

We went through some of the older garden streams so I could show her all my little babies climbing around, sitting on me and generally taking over everything.

It has actually been quite a while since we last did one of those streams — I think the last proper garden stream was back in 2024. My mobility makes setting everything up much more difficult now, although one major problem has disappeared since then. I used to have to run an Ethernet cable out of an upstairs window and all the way down into the garden. There is now a permanent access point outside, so if we get a decent day and I am having a relatively good day physically, I would really like to bring the chicken streams back.

It would probably be less of a garden stream and more me sitting in the shed with a pile of chickens asleep across my knees and shoulders, but that sounds perfectly acceptable.

Once Arthur was allowed to return, The Artist’s Way, Part Two became our next stop. Given what happened the last time we met this particular character, I expected something much more involved. Instead, we met him outside the house, had a conversation, he went back inside and that was essentially the entire mission for now.

With that finished, we checked the map and found another side quest much further north. We rode all the way up there only for the mission marker to disappear by the time we arrived. Assuming it might only be available at night, we set up camp and slept until darkness.

For a moment, I thought we had finally found the next stage of the electric-chair storyline because another professor appeared. It turned out to be an entirely different electrical lunatic.

This was A Bright Bouncing Boy, Part Two, and the game had chosen exactly the right weather for it.

One of the things that stood out during this stream was the rain. I genuinely could not remember seeing proper rainfall during the playthrough before, and it looked fantastic. The stream compression did not always enjoy it quite as much as I did, but on screen the whole landscape looked brilliant under the storm.

That storm also turned out to be rather important, because Arthur was sent up the hillside carrying electrical conductors while lightning repeatedly struck around us. Walking around on exposed ground carrying electrical equipment during a thunderstorm sounds completely safe, so obviously we got straight on with it.

We followed the detector around the hillside, found the correct positions and planted the conductors. Somewhere during all this we may also have fallen from the cliff while trying to get back down, providing another opportunity for the evening’s death-loop collection.

Once everything outside was in place, we returned to the tower and started dealing with the fuses and switches needed to bring the machine back online. After a little trial and error, the experiment finally worked.

I had expected some enormous Frankenstein’s monster moment when the sheet came off.

Instead, underneath it was a small robot.

It staggered around briefly, managed to come alive just long enough for the inventor to be delighted with his new “son,” and then fell over. It was perhaps not quite the dramatic creation scene I had imagined, but technically it worked.

With that mission finished, the long-awaited electric-chair objective had finally returned, so we started heading back towards Saint Denis. The journey did not remain peaceful for very long because a giant kitty suddenly attacked us, knocked Arthur from Tesco’s Lasagna and nearly created yet another death loop.

We answered that with the shotgun and came away with a pelt.

That then created a completely different problem: I had almost no memory of what you are supposed to do with pelts because we have barely touched hunting since the tutorial. Chat began explaining where it could be sold and how the horse inventory worked, including the useful information that I did not actually need to remove the pelt from Tesco’s Lasagna manually.

We rode to the butcher, discovered it could simply be sold directly from the horse and received the magnificent reward of around $2.70 for our trouble.

That conversation also exposed just how little attention I have been paying to horse maintenance throughout the playthrough. Chat started reminding me about brushing, status meters and general horse care while I was forced to admit that Tesco’s Lasagna has largely been expected to just get on with it.

It also brought back memories of his predecessor, Horson Welles, whose career ended after one of my questionable cross-country shortcuts involving cliffs and railway terrain. Tesco’s Lasagna has, so far, survived considerably longer.

Eventually we made it back to The Mercies of Knowledge, Part Seven, which was the final part of the electric-chair storyline.

The professor was still very enthusiastic about his allegedly humane execution method. Chat immediately began supplying the expected collection of “shocking” jokes and comparisons to The Green Mile as Wilson was strapped into the chair.

Calling what followed humane was perhaps slightly optimistic.

The execution did not go particularly cleanly, Wilson spent rather longer being electrocuted than anybody seemed comfortable with, and by the end of the demonstration the professor had also managed to wind up slightly dead.

That did at least mean his corpse could be looted.

We also attempted to loot Wilson once the chair had finished with him, but there did not seem to be any way to move him far enough out of it to interfere with the body. Anything useful he had been carrying was probably a little crispy by then anyway.

With the electrical experiments finally behind us, we moved on to the last mission of the evening: The Artist’s Way, Part Three.

I had a bad feeling about this one before we even entered the building. The previous encounter with Charles Châtenay had already involved him suddenly producing a picture of a naked woman, and I do not allow nudity on the channel, so the censor screen was ready before we reached the gallery.

That turned out to be a very good decision.

We walked inside and there were Bouncy Bouncy’s everywhere.

The Bounty screen therefore spent much of the mission protecting everyone from the art exhibition while events continued behind it. The whole thing descended into arguments and fighting, after which we got Charles out of there and escorted him back to his house.

That was where we wrapped things up for the evening.

Throughout all of this, chat was running its own parallel storyline. TheCollector31 effectively became CheeseCollector31, threatened to take everybody’s cheese and helped create an ongoing dairy conspiracy. Mr. Smith selected the wonderfully unsettling La-la loop on the jukebox, producing immediate muting from certain members of chat and demands from others to play it again. There was also a community heist running while we travelled, Stryker taught me that Arthur could actually carry a lantern while riding, and absolutely everything that went wrong was variously blamed on Gary, Frodo or Mr. Smith depending on who was available.

By the time we saved, we had reached 41% story completion and 38% overall completion. More importantly, the electric-chair storyline that had been hanging over us since the previous stream was finally finished, several side missions had moved forward and Tesco’s Lasagna was still alive.

We ended the night by raiding into Fahr_Avayana, leaving Arthur with plenty of missions still scattered across the map and, presumably, plenty more opportunities for completely avoidable death loops next time.

🌙 Electric Chairs, Art Galleries and Another Friday Survived

We finally finished the electric-chair storyline that had been hanging over us since the previous stream, moved several other side missions forward and somehow kept Tesco’s Lasagna alive through all of it.

There are still plenty of missions waiting on the map, so next time we can continue Arthur’s journey and find out what new problem manages to create the next completely avoidable death loop.
