Sniper Elite III | Ep. 10 – Save Churchill Part 1: In Shadows DLC

🕵️ Into the Shadows

Protecting Churchill sounds like the kind of mission that demands absolute precision, perfect timing, and nerves of steel. Naturally, things didn’t stay that way for very long. What started as a plan to breeze through the opening mission of the In Shadows DLC quickly became another unforgettable evening where stealth constantly teetered on the edge of complete chaos.

This episode marks the beginning of the Save Churchill campaign, taking us deep behind enemy lines where every alleyway, rooftop and hidden corner could either provide the perfect vantage point—or become the place where everything falls apart. Between ambitious plans, unexpected firefights, and a community that was more than happy to encourage every risky decision, this mission turned into far more of an adventure than anyone expected.

🎯 About the Game

Sniper Elite III is a tactical third-person shooter set across the battlefields of World War II North Africa. Blending open-ended level design with stealth, long-range marksmanship and the series’ signature ballistic system, every encounter offers multiple ways to approach your objectives.

Whether you’re patiently lining up the perfect shot from hundreds of metres away or quietly eliminating patrols one by one, every mission rewards observation, planning and adaptability. Of course, as this episode proves, even the best plans have a habit of unravelling when the enemy spots you.

🧭 Where We Are in the Journey

Having completed the main campaign, we’ve now moved into the Save Churchill DLC, beginning with Part 1: In Shadows. Going into the stream, the goal seemed straightforward—complete what was rumoured to be a ten-minute mission, move straight into Part 2, and still have plenty of time left for Marbles on Stream.

Instead, this opening chapter reminded us exactly why Sniper Elite has a habit of turning even the simplest objectives into sprawling adventures filled with exploration, improvisation and the occasional spectacular disaster.

🔥 What Happens in This Episode

The evening begins with plenty of optimism as we return to Plumb Hunters and prepare to protect Churchill. The mission opens with careful movement through the occupied town, and for a brief moment it genuinely looks as though this might be one of our cleanest stealth runs yet.

That illusion doesn’t last long.

Before we know it, practically every enemy on the map seems to know exactly where we are, launching us into what chat quickly christened another “Deathloop.” Rather than getting frustrated, we embrace the madness, dust ourselves off and do exactly what common sense tells us not to do—try again. Somehow, that persistence starts paying off. Timing our movements perfectly, we’re able to quietly eliminate guards while they’re practically looking straight at us, slipping back into cover just before their detection meters fill. Pulling it off once feels lucky. Doing it twice feels almost miraculous.

With confidence restored, we begin sweeping around the map in a slow clockwise route, methodically clearing enemy positions while curiosity constantly pulls us away from the main objective. Every street, building and hidden corner promises something interesting, and before long we’ve explored so much that we almost forget what we originally came here to accomplish. Eventually we find ourselves right back where we started, laughing at how thoroughly we’ve managed to distract ourselves before finally heading towards the mission objectives.

Reaching the command tent immediately raises suspicions. Video game instincts kick in, and we jokingly predict that interacting with it will trigger a cutscene and magically repopulate the entire map with enemies. Sure enough, that’s exactly what happens. Moments after the cinematic ends, the area is crawling with fresh opposition, forcing a frantic retreat as our carefully cleared route suddenly becomes hostile all over again.

Escaping isn’t nearly as straightforward as expected either. Standing beside the entrance we originally used, it seems obvious that we should simply leave the way we came in. Instead, mission logic has other ideas, directing us all the way across the map to a completely different extraction point. After fighting our way back through town, we finally reach the designated exit—only to discover it leads us around the outside of the level towards the very area we had been standing in earlier. It’s one of those wonderfully baffling gaming moments that leaves everyone in chat laughing.

Unfortunately, one final obstacle still stands in the way.

A tank.

After plenty of experimentation, tense manoeuvring and searching for its weak point, we finally land the decisive shots needed to destroy it, clearing the path and bringing the first chapter of the DLC to a satisfying conclusion. What was supposed to be a quick ten-minute warm-up had stretched into an entertaining forty-five-minute adventure packed with stealth, firefights, exploration and plenty of laughs.

With Churchill temporarily safe, the stream shifts over to Marbles on Stream. My marble, V, unfortunately loses its Grand Prix winning streak as Striker_500 claims victory in the opening race. Later in the evening, FlyingFox21 arrives with a welcome raid following their Fallout 4: Far Harbor stream, bringing even more energy to chat before winning the second Grand Prix themselves. As always, the night finishes by passing the community spirit forward with a raid into kingironblood, rounding off another fantastic evening with friends.
