🎃 Edge Of Evil | Ep. 3 – I’ve Come for Mittens. The Rest of You Can Stay Dead
We’re heading back into Edge Of Evil for what I hoped would finally be the end of our search for Mittens. The dark mine, puzzles and things trying to kill us have made this rather more complicated than expected.
My biggest concern was whether the save file would work. If we were sent back to the beginning again, I was quite prepared to play something else. Fortunately, things went better this time. Mostly.
🐈 About the Game
Edge Of Evil is a psychological horror adventure in which the search for a lost kitten leads into an ancient pirate crypt. We explore hidden passages, disturb old graves, dig for clues and treasure, and solve puzzles while undead shadow creatures lurk below.
There’s a mystery surrounding a broken ancient seal, fully voiced characters and plenty of dark corridors. And sometimes there are places we really weren’t meant to go.
🚂 Where We Are in the Journey
This is episode three of our Edge Of Evil playthrough, and I honestly think we might have finished it last time if the save system hadn’t caused trouble. During the second stream, our save put us right back at the start, leaving us to retrace our steps.
I hadn’t opened the game since, so I was worried it might happen again. Thankfully, we loaded beside the railway lines in the abandoned mine, right where we left off. We could finally find out what happened to Mittens.
🕳️ What Happens in This Episode
The first thing we had to find out was whether our save file was going to work. During the previous stream, loading our saved game had put us all the way back at the beginning, and we had to spend a couple of hours getting back to where we should have been. I hadn’t opened Edge Of Evil since then, so I was quite worried the same thing might happen again. If it had, I probably would have changed games rather than repeat everything for a second time.
Fortunately, this time we loaded right where we had left off, beside the railway lines in the abandoned mine. We had some broken machinery to investigate, railway switches to work out, and fuses to find that something appeared to have been burying around the tunnels. There were also explosives scattered about, although I remembered that we’d blown something up at the end of the previous stream and decided not to rush into doing that again.
Of course, within the first few minutes, I managed to get out of bounds again. We’d found a gap in the side of a wall, and although there wasn’t much room to explore, we could still have a look outside the intended level. Unlike the more open area we’d escaped into last time, this part of the mine was quite enclosed, so there wasn’t a great deal to see. It was still amusing, though, and I took another clip to send to Bill, the solo developer of Edge Of Evil, so he’d have something else to patch.
Bill actually joined us in chat during the previous stream, which made our earlier out-of-bounds adventures even more entertaining. Apparently, if there’s somewhere in a game that I’m not supposed to go, I’ll eventually find it. At least this time we didn’t manage to wander quite so far away from the intended area.
Once we were back where we belonged, we continued exploring the tunnels. There were some rather unpleasant creatures lurking around, along with several passages that seemed determined to send us to our deaths. We had a few more unfortunate encounters with gaps and hazards, and the occasional attempt to investigate something suspicious didn’t end particularly well. I was also trying to work out the railway system, as it looked as though we might need to send a minecart along the correct track to break through an obstruction.
We eventually found a trapped character who explained more about the witch and the crypt. Apparently, the treasure wasn’t simply being protected by all these puzzles and traps. The gold was being used as bait, with the trials designed to expose the greed of anyone attempting to claim it. We also encountered another puzzle involving red and blue pieces that needed moving around a circular mechanism. We’d seen something similar in a previous game, so I had a rough idea of what we were supposed to do. After moving the pieces around for a while, we finally managed to solve it and collect the key we needed.
There were a few conversations with chat along the way. Vvoornth recognised Edge Of Evil as the horror game involving a cat and mentioned playing Construction Simulator, while cheesecollector31 dropped in with a “Boo” and recalled a funny moment involving a chicken chasing a squirrel. We also had asmith501 discussing the different smelters and refineries in Satisfactory, particularly the requirements for copper, iron and Caterium. That led to a conversation about the production settings he was using and how much work it was going to take to recalculate everything. I mentioned that I really couldn’t face starting a completely new game of Satisfactory myself.
Asmith501 also selected “Gotta Eradicate ‘Em All (Pokey-mo Mayhem)” for a musical interlude, so we had that playing while we continued trying to work out where to go. It was a quieter evening than usual, but we still managed a few conversations between the puzzles and the occasional death.
Eventually, we made our way back towards the surface and discovered what had actually happened to poor Mittens. A supernatural spirit had used the kitten as a host to return to its own body, but Mittens had subsequently been killed near the cemetery gates. So, after all that effort searching for the cat, it turned out that the poor little thing was already dead.
That presented us with a bit of a problem, particularly as our girlfriend was expecting us to bring her kitten home. We were told about an ancient altar that could restore Mittens to life, provided we had the correct stone. Unfortunately, there was a catch. The altar couldn’t create a new soul; it could only transfer an existing one into another body. That was going to make rescuing Mittens rather more complicated than simply finding him.
Before we could attempt the resurrection, there were still a few things to deal with. We encountered another puzzle involving several rotating rings and compass directions, followed by what appeared to be the final boss fight against the witch and her summoned creatures. There were several different enemies to fight, including some rather amusing-looking creatures with rockets attached to their backs. Between trying to avoid the attacks, remembering which button used the health kits, and reloading our weapons, we eventually managed to defeat the witch.
With the immediate danger out of the way, we returned to the chamber where the soul transfer could take place. We learned that the ritual could use blood or a person’s likeness, such as a photograph, to identify a suitable soul. There was a rather uncomfortable possibility involving somebody else becoming Mittens, but we decided against that.
We also had another conversation with our girlfriend, who made it quite clear that she wasn’t interested in hearing excuses about what had happened. She wanted her cat back, regardless of what it took. I was beginning to think we would have been better off going to an animal shelter and finding another kitten that looked like Mittens.
In the end, we chose to sacrifice our own soul to bring Mittens back to life. The resurrection worked, but instead of simply rescuing the cat and taking him home, we became Mittens ourselves. So, after everything we’d been through, all the puzzles, the creatures, the witch and the various unfortunate accidents, we finally found Mittens by becoming Mittens.
The ending left us sitting on the knee of a very sexy lady. So now we’re a little pussy, sitting next to her tight little pussy. Not quite the ending I was expecting when we originally set out to rescue the kitten, but at least Mittens was alive again.
We also discovered during the ending that we’d missed four of the stones and hadn’t bothered collecting most of the emeralds and other treasure. I wasn’t particularly concerned about that, as we’d managed to reach the conclusion of the story. There was also some copyrighted music playing during the ending, so I had to mute the game, and the credits weren’t particularly keen on letting us skip through them.
Garydsteel arrived towards the end and suggested we should forget about the cat and run, which was probably reasonable advice considering everything that had happened. He also pointed out the unfortunate fact that, after all our efforts, the cat had died anyway. Thankfully, by that point we’d managed to bring Mittens back, even if it had cost us our own soul.
I’d originally planned to finish Edge Of Evil and then play some Marbles with everyone afterwards. Unfortunately, there weren’t very many people around in chat that evening, so after approximately forty-five minutes of gameplay, we decided there wasn’t much point in starting Marbles or organising a raid. Instead, we went through the upcoming stream schedule and wrapped things up for the evening.
That brought our Edge Of Evil playthrough to an end. I’m pleased we finally managed to complete it, particularly after the save-game problems during the previous session. I’ve really enjoyed playing another of Bill’s games, and I’m already looking forward to seeing what WRF Studios comes out with next year. I always enjoy the games he releases, and it’ll be interesting to see what he has planned for us next time.

🐾 We Finally Found Mittens… Sort Of
That’s Edge Of Evil completed, even if rescuing Mittens required an unexpected sacrifice. I’m glad we didn’t have to replay everything, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Bill and WRF Studios release next year. I really enjoy his games.
Thank you for joining me, and have a lovely day.
