Dune: Awakening | Ep. 27 – Hubert Can Smell Fear. Good Thing I Have None
Arrakis remains dangerous, sandy, and deeply invested in ending my survival career. Thankfully, confidence counts for something… right?
Some evenings on Arrakis feel like grand expeditions into the unknown. Others feel like the planet itself has filed a formal complaint about your continued existence and intends to enforce it personally.
This stream landed firmly in the second category.
What started as a straightforward evening of Landsraad missions and combat progression slowly transformed into one of those gloriously chaotic sessions where the enemies weren’t the only thing fighting against us. Sometimes survival on Arrakis means battling sandworms, raiders, and hostile patrols. Sometimes it means battling the UI.
🌵 About the Game
Dune: Awakening drops players into the brutal world of Arrakis and asks a simple question: how long can you survive?
From scavenging resources and building shelter to crafting vehicles and uncovering the mystery surrounding the missing Fremen, the game blends survival systems with exploration, politics, and large-scale multiplayer conflict in one of science fiction’s most iconic settings.
The desert is unforgiving, the storms are deadly, and somewhere beneath the sand, something very large is listening.
🧭 Where We Are in the Journey
By Episode 27 we’re well beyond simply surviving the opening hours.
The plan for this stream had originally involved pushing further into the solo Chapter 3 storyline, but with Gary joining the expedition for the evening, the decision was made to leave that for another day and focus instead on Landsraad contracts and group progression.
At least, that was the plan.
⚠️ What Happens in This Episode
Fresh gear was prepared, a new cape was equipped, and optimism levels were dangerously high as we headed out onto the sands in search of missions, skill progression, and opportunities to put some recently acquired equipment through its paces.
Naturally, Arrakis had other ideas.
The evening quickly became a test not of combat ability but of patience as Dune: Awakening’s multiplayer mission systems began fighting back harder than any enemy patrol ever could. Objectives refused to sync correctly, mission progress vanished into the desert, and interactions that should have worked simply… didn’t.
Somehow we still managed to force two Landsraad missions over the finish line through equal parts determination and stubborn refusal to surrender to the interface.
The combat itself was every bit as frantic as expected. Ruins became battlegrounds, rooftops became emergency escape routes, and several encounters came down to medkits, panic, and refusing to accept that dying was a reasonable outcome.
A newly acquired weapon received a proper field test during the fighting, producing results that ranged from encouraging to deeply questionable depending on which enemy happened to be standing in front of it at the time.
One particularly memorable revelation explained why survival suddenly felt significantly more difficult than normal.
The shields weren’t on.
After several suspiciously lethal encounters and more than one unfortunate death, the discovery that defensive systems had never been reactivated after entering the mission area finally solved the mystery. Arrakis is already trying to kill you without volunteering for the experience.
The mission chaos continued when Gary left the zone slightly earlier than expected, creating another round of confusion while attempting to share objectives and recover progress back in Hagga Basin.
Unfortunately, by the time we regrouped, Gary had apparently decided that the best tactical response was to disappear into desert and abandon me to my fate.
Determined to keep the stream moving, I attempted to push on with the next mission regardless, but sometimes the momentum simply isn’t there. The sands had won the argument for the evening, and with enthusiasm running low, we called the expedition early and returned to base to regroup for another day.
Meanwhile, chat was operating on an entirely separate reality.
The legendary Harmonica of Doom returned from the depths of stream history, dysentery jokes somehow survived another week, and the increasingly popular #blamegary movement gathered further support among the community.
The true weapon of mass destruction, however, was undoubtedly the arrival of the infamous Tick-Tock Cheese Loop. What began as a joke rapidly evolved into psychological warfare, with arguments about cheese, loops, and viewer sanity echoing across the desert.
Some battles are simply unwinnable.
As the evening came to a close, we packed away the loot, sorted supplies, and accepted that while the missions may have resisted cooperation, the entertainment certainly didn’t.
Before signing off, we sent the community onwards with a raid into Rooville to keep the adventure going long after the sands settled.

No traveller survives Arrakis alone. Every expedition needs scouts, storytellers, medics, and witnesses willing to confirm that the disaster absolutely wasn’t my fault.

🌙 Closing Thoughts
The sands claimed momentum this time around, but Arrakis has a habit of rewarding persistence.
The missions remain unfinished, the desert remains hostile, and Hubert may well be able to smell fear.
Good thing I still don’t have any.
